Paying Union dues (at this time period) was standard for a miner to do. The document below is a record of that and I hope folks can tell me more about being a member of a union versus not while working in the mines. I recall that Raleigh County was one of the hardest to unionize. As late as 1933, FDR had threatened to call in troops if unions were not allowed. In fact, Whitby's Union House was not in Whitby, but rather in Jonben (some folks called it Joe Ben)which was very close by. Click Here to see the house.
